Vanessa will coordinate and administer DNR’s interdisciplinary activities in the Mississippi River basin from Upper St. Anthony Falls south to the Iowa boarder, including coordinating the DNR’s Mississippi River Staff Team and Mississippi River Steering Team. 78 Miles of Connectivity Coming Soon to the Wapsipinicon River!
Author: Cristina Stahl, USFWS The Wapsipinicon (Wapsi) River is located in eastern Iowa and a tributary to the Mississippi River. The 268 mile long river provides habitat for 90 species of fish and 18 species of mussels. One of those mussel species is the endangered Higgins’ eye found in the lower portions of the river. UMR National Wildlife and Fish Refuge La Crosse District Update
Even while entering our second summer of the COVID-19 pandemic, summer brought celebrations on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. In June, the Friends of the Refuge – Mississippi River Pools 7 & 8 worked with a local taxidermist and refuge staff to complete a grant received from the La Crosse Foundation which provided five new “ducks on a stick” to add to or replace birds in our collection!
